This workshop will begin with an investigation into the intertwining histories of experimental film (rooted in the materiality of celluloid) and video art (rooted primarily in sculpture) and their intersection in today’s contemporary hybrid nonfiction cinematic/art practice.
A section of the lecture will be devoted to creative writing as a means to develop a critical discourse between the poetics of individual experience, representation of truth, the concept of point of view, the objective/subjective paradox, and the dynamic forces of context.

Science of the Word, Part I
Curated by: Jheanelle Brown
July 28, 2020 at 2:00pm PST
Post-screening conversation with Stella Rae Binion, Jésus Hilario-Reyes, and Leah Solomon
Inspired by Jamaican cultural theorist Sylvia Wynter’s Science of the Word, the proposition that the study of the word should condition the study of nature, this program presents films and videos from emerging filmmakers and artists who bridge language and the sonic to contend with both terrestrial and cosmic rupture. The filmmakers and artists presented embody their moving image works with other disciplines, namely poetry and performance, in pursuit of a grounded examination of self.
*Please note: all films/videos contain onscreen text and intertitles, but not captions.

Visiting Artist - FDP Summer Series - Presentation & Conversation with Lee Anne Schmitt - Confirmed
July 31, 2020 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
via Zoom [check email for link]
Open to all Film/Video students!
Please join us for a very special conversation and presentation by core FDP faculty member, Lee Anne Schmitt, who will be sharing selections of short work including William's Lake (2018) and The Farnsworth Score (made in collaboration with musician Rob Mazurek), as well as a new short work, as of yet untitled. She will also share thoughts on her process and footage from works in progress, including parts of Evidence, the last in a series of feature length documentaries about political thought in the USA and, so that i may come back, an experimental portrait of trauma and narrative that revolves around the case of Mary Bell who, at age 10, was convicted of murdering two smaller boys from her council flats.
Lee Anne is an artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles interested in political thought, personal experience and the land. Much of her work involves 16mm filmmaking placed in landscape, objects and the traces of political systems left upon them.
Her projects have addressed American exceptionalism, the logic of utility and labor, gestures of kindness and refusal, racial violence, cowboyism, trauma and narrative and the efficacy of solitude.
Lee Anne has exhibited widely at venues that include MoMA NY, the Getty Museum, RedCat Theater, Northwest Film Society, Centre Pompidou and festivals such as Viennale, CPH/DOX, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, BAFICI and FID Marseilles. Schmitt is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from Creative Capital and the Graham Foundation.

https://calarts.zoom.us/j/91047100677
Part of APPROACHING THE NEAR DISTANCE: COMMUNITY, RESISTANCE & MAKING, School of Film/Video Wintersession Virtual Conference
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Reece Auguiste
Auguiste is a founding member of the Black Audio Film Collective (UK) and currently CU Boulder Critical Practices Media Faculty. Auguiste’s talk for Wintersession will address the interpretive complexities of a media archive and the use of archival materials in documentary moving image art. He will also speak about the currency of documentary co-creation, and his experience working within Black Audio Film Collective (UK, 1982-98), a group of young, mostly immigrant filmmakers who challenged existing cinematic forms of expression to comment on contemporary social emergencies. In a recent (Sept, 2020) open online discussion group on Unsettling Documentary, Auguiste commented on the urgent need to consider new pedagogical models, and he will bring this concern to his Approaching the Near Distance talk as well: “The coronavirus is unsettling, and it has unsettled all of us including our institutional affiliations...Our job, I think, is to not only develop new pedagogical models in the context of Covid-19 but to encourage our students to explore new epistemic territory, to develop their own models of creative practice and central to this transformation is co-creative practices...It’s going to be a slow burn---Covid-19 has lit the fuse of this decolonial project.”
This event is sponsored by the Nick England Intercultural Arts Project
