Free Software during Remote Instruction – Spring 2020

To aid current students in the School of Film/Video with working on their projects and classwork during COVID-19, we have been able to extend some of our software licenses to work remotely or offer free alternatives for Spring 2020.

Some of this software may be limited to School of Film/Video students, we will try our best to support all students enrolled in School of Film/Video classes this semester.

Be aware, some of these may take up to a week or two to go through.

Any codes or web links sent to you through tickets should remain private and not to be shared with anyone else.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription, which includes all of Adobe’s apps such as Photoshop and After Effects, is available for free to students through May 31st, 2020 using their CalArts credentials.

Apple Pro Apps: Final Cut Pro X and Logic X

Apple is offering 90 day free trials of Final Cut Pro X. Go to their website to download the free trial.

Autodesk

Autodesk products such as Maya are available to students for free via their website.

Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools

Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools Ultimate are available to current School of Film/Video students for 90 days.

You must create an Avid Master Account (and an iLok account for Pro Tools) before being able to use the code given to you. Instructions can be found here: Using Avid Pro Tools or Media Composer at Home.

After you have created an Avid Master Account (and iLok account for Pro Tools), submit a ticket, selecting “Pro Tools” or “Media Composer” in the ticket drop down menu.

Blackmagic Design

Davinci Resolve has a robust free version that is available on Mac, PC and Linux on their website.

Chaos Group: V-ray for Maya

Chaos Group is offering 1 year licenses for V-ray for Maya. 

To receive the V-ray for Maya promo code and instructions, submit a ticket selecting “V-ray for Maya” in the ticket drop down menu.

Cinema 4D

Cinema 4D, a popular 3D animation application, is available to students for free via Maxon’s website.

DEFlicker

There are a limited number licenses for DEFlicker that expire on May 31, 2020. Please do not request a license unless you need it.

To request a code, submit a ticket selecting “DEFlicker” in the ticket drop down menu.

Dragonframe

There are a limited number of Dragonframe licenses available, please do not request a license unless you need it.

To request a code, submit a ticket selecting “Dragonframe” in the ticket drop down menu.

Final Draft

Final Draft is available for free for current School of Film/Video students until June 3, 2020.

To get the free license code that expires June 3, 2020, submit a ticket selecting “Final Draft” in the ticket drop down menu.

Highland 2 Pro

Highland 2 is software for writing screenplays that can work for almost every kind of document you write. From novels to blog posts and school reports, Highland’s clean design and innovative tools help you focus on words, not formatting.

For instructions on how to obtain a free license to Highland 2 Pro, submit a ticket selecting “Highland 2 Pro” in the ticket drop down menu.

Microsoft Office 365

Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools.

Go to Microsoft Office 365 and enter a valid school email address to get started.

Red Giant Complete Suite

Red Giant is offering free 1-year licenses to their complete suite: VFX, Magic Bullet, Universe, Shooter and Trapcode.

To receive a free 1 year license for Red Giant, go to their website and create a new account with your alum.calarts.edu email address.

After your account is created, submit a ticket selecting “Red Giant” in the drop down menu. Include the name and alum.calarts.edu email address you used to create the account. 

You will receive an email from Red Giant with a download link for a personal 1 year license of Red Giant Complete.

ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB)

There are a limited number licenses for ReelSmart Motion Blur that expire on May 31, 2020. Please do not request a license unless you need it.

To request a code, submit a ticket selecting “ReelSmart Motion Blur” in the ticket drop down menu.

Soundly (Soundminer cloud-based alternative)

Soundly is a cloud-based sound effects database application. It has a limited number of sound effects available for free to students in the School of Film/Video until July 15, 2020.

To receive the Soundly promo code and instructions, submit a ticket selecting “Soundly” in the ticket drop down menu.

Substance Painter

Substance Painter is offering free licenses for students on their website.

SynthEyes

There are a limited number of 90 day licenses for SynthEyes, please do not request a license unless you need it.

To request a code, submit a ticket selecting “SynthEyes” in the ticket drop down menu.

Toon Boom

CalArts and the School of Film/Video have partnered with Toon Boom for the academic year. In addition to adding Harmony Premium and Storyboard Pro to our computer labs, we have also arranged for currently enrolled students to obtain free personal desktop licenses.

As a student at CalArts, you are entitled to a free one-year desktop subscription of ToonBoom’s Harmony Premium and Storyboard Pro software to use on your own personal computer.

To get the special instructions to download your Harmony and Storyboard Pro licenses, submit a ticket selecting “Storyboard Pro” or “Harmony Premium” from the ticket drop down menu.

Twixtor Pro

There are a limited number licenses for Twixtor Pro that expire on May 31, 2020. Please do not request a license unless you need it.

To request a code, submit a ticket selecting “Twixtor Pro” in the ticket drop down menu.

TVPaint

To get details on how to access TVPaint from home, submit a ticket selecting “TVPaint” in the ticket drop down menu.

ZBrush

Requests for this software are due by 5pm on Monday, March 30, 2020.

ZBrush is offering 60 day licenses for students.

Please register for the ZBrush 2020 Trial version using your alum.calarts.edu email address. Install and activate the trial.

Submit a ticket, selecting “ZBrush” in the ticket drop down menu, to confirm the email address you used and get an your license extended to 60 days.

If you have run ZBrush 4R7 or 2018 Trial you will still be able to register for the 2020 Trial using the same email address as before.
