Theme for 2023: Air: Commons, Chaotic Fluid, Inspiration
In 2023, the Nature, Art and Habitat Residency (NAHR) will explore the function, mechanism, importance and state of air from a range of natural, social, and political perspectives. NAHR‘s 2023 theme “Air: Commons, Chaotic Fluid, Inspiration” is focused on the role of air in ecology, climate, and design, and beyond.
Applicants to NAHR 2023 are asked to consider broad questions that may include explorations that ask: How can human relationships with air help to stop or slow down the climate crisis? What is our awareness of the ecology of air? How does air connect us and highlight issues of global justice? And more.
The Taleggio Valley in the foothills of the Alps in northern Italy is this residency’s local context (in 2023 NAHR has a second location in Santa Ynez Valley, in California), and provides a lens to view these planetary questions. The valley is a unique and expansive eco-canvas for works of bio-inspired design, art, architecture, theory, scientific research, performance, and poetry, with a special balance between human made and natural systems.
NAHR invites projects seeking to engage with questions of air, and with those interested in developing strategies to rebalance and redesign our relationship to it, reflecting on how we interact with, and affect, our atmosphere.
